Australia has posted an improvement in a broad range of indices in the annual Commitment to Development Index (CDI), but continues to suffer for its poor environmental policy track record.
The Center for Global Development’s (CGD) annual index tracks 27 of the world’s richest countries on their dedication to policies that impact on the the developing world.
The country’s aid, finance and trade ranking accounted for most of its increase, but has posted low rankings in its environmental index.
“Environment is one of Australia’s weaker policy fields on the CDI. Its low rank is largely due to its poor performance curbing climate change,” the report concluded.
The country’s low petrol charges, high fossil fuel production and the highest greenhouse gas emissions per capita of all CDI countries has continued to dog development in the main indices.
